Whatsapp for Android to support data back-up to Google Drive

1 Min Read

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has entered into a partnership with bitter rival of its parent company, Google to give users of the WhatsApp for Android app an opportunity to back up data to Google Drive.

Google Drive is a cloud storage service that allows users to back-up valuable data such as text messages, phone contacts, chat history,  photos, stories, designs, drawings, recordings, videos and so on, online for later use.

The partnership will allow users of WhatsApp for Android to back up their chat history and media content to Google Drive when the service is eventually rolled out.

With this agreement, users will be able to restore their stored data from Google Drive to their device in case of loss and a new device in case of change.

Google, which says it wants to “keep your memories safe”, announced the service will be rolled out in the next few months. Once it is available, the option to use the service is expected to automatically appear on WhatsApp settings.

A similar service in WhatsApp for iOS lets users back up chats to iCloud.
