A new study has revealed that teenagers who are always on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter may experience depression because of the constant need to be online.

Researchers from University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom explained that the need to respond to every post, tweet and message has a huge effect on self-esteem and quality of sleep.

467 students between the ages 11 and 17 years were asked about their social media habits and how they feel about it.

They were asked questions like How many hours do you use social media on a typical day?” and “How long do you use social media after the time you intended to fall asleep?”

The study showed that teens that were most active are the ones who have the worst sleep quality and they are vulnerable to anxiety and depression. The experience is called FOMO or Fear of Missing Out interesting things that happen on social media when offline.

The study recommended that social media be used moderately because overuse could be very harmful.
