Student Electrocution: UNILAG Management, Residents Point Fingers At Eko DISCO

2 Min Read

The management of the University of Lagos has blamed the Eko Electricity Distribution Company over the death by electrocution of a brilliant 300 level accounting student, Oluchi Anekwe.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Rahamon Bello said that the management of the university had severally drawn the attention of the EKO Disco to their dilapidated infrastructure, however the consistent pleas fell on deaf ears.

Other students and residents in the area pointed out many other potential hazards waiting to escalate into tragedies to The Herald correspondents who visited the Onike and Akoka areas.

Wires belonging to EKO Disco were seen criss crossing the entire area in a serpentine fashion with some apparently naked wires left dangling in an unsafe manner.

When The Herald visited the Onike Iwaya office of Eko Disco, we were asked to head to the Marina office of the company. Upon our arrival at The Marina office of the firm, we were told that the Public Relations officer had just stepped out of his seat.

Residents in the Onike area have previously cited the EKO Disco staff as prone to corruption and always neglecting their duties unless given a bribe to do so. When The Herald interviewed the staff to verify the authenticity of the claims, some of the staff cited the inability of management to provide them with adequate compensation and lambasted their supervisors for setting unrealistic revenue targets for them.

Currently some residents in the Majaro and Akintunde streets, clients of EKO Disco claim that they have not seen electricity for over a week, after the tragic death of Ms. Anekwe.
