Indi’s Red Card “Very Stupid” – Robben

2 Min Read

Netherlands captain Arjen Robben has described Martin Indi’s red card against Iceland as “very stupid” in a match the Dutch team lost 1-0 on Thursday.

The Porto man was red-carded in the 33th minute for viciously lashing out at Iceland’s Kolbeinn Sighthorsson in the first half of the Euro 2016 qualifier at the Amsterdam Arena, and the Bayern Munich winger felt the action let the whole team down.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was the hero for Iceland with a 51st-minute penalty after Dutch defender Gregory van der Wiel brought down Birkir Bjarnason.

“As captain I will always stand by my players, but I can’t say anything else then that this is very stupid. He really lets his team-mates down and I think that’s a big shame,” Robben said.

The Dutch are in danger of missing out on a spot at Euro 2016, sitting third in Group A and six points behind the Czech Republic.

Midfielder Wesley Sneijder challenged his team to win their last three games and at least secure a spot in the play-off.

“We need to win three times and if that fails, you know you do not belong in the European Championships,” he said.

The UEFA Euro 2016 finals will take place in France.
