Court Remands Student In Prison Custody Over Theft Of Phones

1 Min Read

A 23-year-old student, Uche Oroke, of Congo Russia Street, Jos, has been remanded in prison custody for stealing two Nokia phones by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Plateau State.

Oroke had pleaded guilty, while the Chief Magistrate, Tijanni Zololo, ordered the remand of the accused and adjourned the case till August 28 for sentencing.

Oroke had told the court that “it was the devil that made me do it and I needed money to pay my school fees, have mercy on me.”

Earlier, the prosecutor, Corporal Samuel Chirkwap, told the court that one Mrs Ngozi Chikelu of Angwan Rukuba reported the matter on August 20.

Chirkwap said the student went into the complainant’s shop, pretended to be a customer, but ended up stealing her phones valued at N15,000.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused sold the phones to one ‘Tolley’ of Congo Russia, who was arrested by the police.

He added that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
