2 Min Read

The United Nations Secretary- General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon is due in Nigerian on Sunday. He is scheduled to meet President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.

While in Nigeria Ban is expected to carry out other field activities.

Ban Ki-Moon in a statement issued on Tuesday March 31, in New York, said he had spoken to Jonathan and Buhari on the outcome of the polls as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Mr Ban had congratulated President Buhari on winning the presidential election.

He commended Jonathan for his leadership qualities throughout the electoral process and his statesmanship in upholding the democratic process.

He also applauded INEC for organizing the elections in a professional and credible “manner under challenging circumstances”.

He further called on all Nigerians to accept the outcome of the elections, appealing to them to address any complaints they may have through existing legal and constitutional channels.

Ban Ki-Moon said the successful conduct of the polls was a testimony to the maturity of Nigeria’s democracy.

The visit also comes just as the United Nations is also looking forward to Buhari’s participation at the 70th anniversary of the world body, in New York, in September.

An official said more than 100 heads of state – alongside Buhari, are expected at the yearly global summit in New, where the Nigerian delegation might be one of the major attractions.
