Writing for NET, Kayode Badmus examines the Mavin records songstress chances of getting back her crown as Nigeria’s top female musician.
“After months of being inactive on the music scene, Mavin 1st lady, Tiwa Savage welcomed her first child on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 throwing the country into a frenzy. Tiwa and her husband, Teebillz had at the beginning of the year announced that the ‘Eminado’ singer is expecting a baby, which sprang up a countdown from fans and colleagues.
While Tiwa’s pregnancy was however welcomed by many, it was indeed not much of exciting news to some loyal fans who felt this development would slow her down professionally. Of course the many men in lust with her were heartbroken. Well, they were not totally wrong after all: Tiwa gradually left the music while nursing her home and unborn child. This year, Kiss Daniel’s remix of his hit single ‘Woju’ which featured Tiwa Savage and Davido as well as Mavin cover of Rihanna’s BBHMM which featured Tiwa Savage and Reekado Banks were the only notable works credited to the new mother.
In her absence, other ladies stepped up to occupy the vacuum, with Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay shinning the most. Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay explored the opportunity to the fullest with the ‘Johnny’ singer winning Best Female award at the recently held MTV African Music Awards in South Africa while Shay scored a big performance duet with Neyo.
It must be noted Tiwa Savage won the award last year and her absence from the music scene didn’t even get her a nomination at this year’s event. Other females who have also been on the rise since Tiwa got busy nursing her unborn child are Chidinma, Cynthia Morgan, Simi whose ‘Jamb Question’ continues to make waves.
Despite her absence from the music scene, the queen however continued raking in money for herself and her label renewing her endorsement deals with telco firm, MTN and beverage company, Pepsi. Now that her son has arrived, Tiwa is expected to make a return to what she loves doing most. Although, that might not be happening this year as Tiwa focuses on nursing her infant.
2016 is expected to usher in the return of the queen but can she return to her spot at the top? We can’t even wait!
