Women Who Smoke More Likely to Suffer Symptoms of Menopause – Study

1 Min Read
Smoking ban

A recent study has revealed that women who smoke are more likely to suffer symptoms of menopause compared to non-smokers and ex-smokers.

Study author, Rebecca Smith, a researcher in epidemiology at the University of Illinois said “While the effect was strongest if women quit at least five years before the onset of menopause, even women quitting later did have a better outcome than women who continued to smoke. I hope that this encourages women to quit smoking, the earlier the better.”

Ellen Freeman, a researcher in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia also added that “It is never too late to quit, and quitting may reduce other health risks that are even more serious than the hot flashes. To my knowledge, this is the first study to show that stopping smoking in mid-life can reduce hot flashes.”
