And The #Buhari Media Censorship Has Started: AIT First Victim But Who Is Next? – Okechukwu Ofili

2 Min Read

And the Buhari media censorship has started … and early …

“Staff of Africa Independent Television, AIT, have been barred from covering all activities of the President-elect, Gen. Buhari until issues bordering on ethics and standards against them have been addressed.

AIT crew members were today escorted out of the Defence House where the president-elect currently resides. He was about to have a meeting with the Cuban and Switzerland ambassadors when the reporters were escorted out.”

Sounds like decree 4 all over again, a law drafted in 1984 to punish authors of supposedly false statements and reports that exposed the Buhari administration and or its officials to ridicule or contempt … a law basically used to censor the press.

And I know, people will say “but AIT is biased” And I say so what!

In a democracy you will have this, it ensures balance. I mean America has the openly biased FOX news … But yet Obama does not bar them from the State of the Union address or from Press Conferences. So I call this Buhari move “bullshit” and a clear and early attack on press freedom.

But hey … his honeymoon period is still on. Nigeria is still drowning in the chants of “change,” still drunk from drinking the “change” wine. People are still walking from Lagos to Abuja to be bothered by this …

So I understand that my “bullshit call” is in the minority today. But let’s watch and see what happens … after-all we have 4 more years to go.
