Serena Williams won her eighth Miami Open title on Saturday by crushing Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-0.
Williams, the world’s top-ranked player, moved alongside Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf in winning the same tournament on eight occasions. Thanks to her powerful serve and superb forehand, Williams was dominant throughout the match.
Suarez Navarro made no inroads and lost a fifth successive defeat to the American. In a 10-game run, Williams demonstrated her superiority in the energy-sapping Miami heat.
On the rare occasions that Suarez Navarro was able to apply pressure, Williams produced an ace or an un-returnable serve to reassert her authority. Suarez Navarro crumbled under 21 unforced errors.
Saturday marked Williams’ 66th career title and second of 2015 with a 21st successive win on tour. She won the year’s first major, the Australian Open and won four matches at Indian Wells before leaving that tournament with a bum knee.
