Carlo Ancelotti has warned his Real Madrid players that “we won’t go very far” in the Champions League if they repeat Tuesday’s performance against Schalke.
Los Blancos reached the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition by the skin of their teeth, having lost 4-3 to the Royal Blues in the second leg, and the Coach did not mince his words when quizzed on his side’s performance at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“We won’t go very far [in the Champions League if we continue playing like this],” he told Teledeporte.
“There’s not much to say about this game. The match didn’t go as expected. We experience a clear dip in each game and won’t go far [like this].
“[The fans’ reaction after the final whistle] is normal. We’re the first to say that we played badly, so the jeers are deserved.
“We played so bad that it’s very difficult to explain, or rather easy because we were lacking in every aspect. [Luka] Modric played easily and comfortable for half an hour.
“I still trust my squad because they’ve won everything they could, so I still have a lot of confidence in them.”
