Bassey Bassey also known as Baci is a pioneer member of Made Men Music Group.
In a recent interview with PUNCH Baci explains why he prefers music to film-making.
How did you start music?
My father used to play the guitar while I was growing up and my mother was a member of the church choir. I was brought up by my stepmother who ensured everyone in the house was involved in some form of activity in church. I joined the choir; while I was there, I learnt how to play the drums and harmonica. I studied at the International Film Institute, Jos and moved to Abuja afterward.
When did you become a professional artiste?
I released my first single in Abuja in 2008 but the song was recorded in Jos. It was titled Bugabuga. Buga means, Play in English. My uncle went to music school in France and had a studio in his house in Jos.
When did you move to Lagos?
I was part of the MTN Project Fame in 2008 but I did not make it into the house. There were 14 housemates and they needed one more person to make them 15. I was one of the three contestants brought from Abuja to compete for the remaining spot. Even though I lost out, the organisers of the show ensured I participated in their music tours. That was how Iyanya and I became close even we had known ourselves for a long time in Calabar. I spoke to him and he encouraged me to move to Lagos. I lived with him in a one-room apartment.
What is your genre in music?
I grew up listening to the likes of Donell Jones, Joe and Brian McKnight. I do R ‘n’ B music but I decided to reflect my culture in my music so it’s a fusion of R ‘n’ B and Afro sound.
Do you write your songs?
I write my songs but I do not make beats, although I have an idea of what it means to create a beat. I might not know how to make the sound I want but whenever a producer brings out the kind of sound I want to make, I can do what I want with the help of the sound engineer.
How did you join Made Men Music Group?
I am one of the pioneer members of Made Men Music Group. We started it together and I suggested the name of the label. Ubi Franklin has always been our chairman and Iyanya, the financier.
Do you have any album?
I do not have an album, but I have a couple of singles. I am working on my project.
As a musician, has your knowledge of film come in handy?
Music is part of film-making. I have learnt how to relate music with film because they go together.
Are you scared of competition?
I have never been scared of competition. It means challenge. As much as I am being challenged, I try to work on my challenge to become better.
Which artistes do you wish to work with?
I already did a song with Iyanya but I would like to do a song with Tuface and Timaya. On the African continent, I want to work with Fally Ipupa. They are people I look up to and listen to their songs.
What kind of woman appeals to you?
She has to be a woman like my mother – homely, God-fearing and beautiful. Beauty for me does not really mean looks. It is inclusive, but the carriage is most important. Her approach to life in a positive way will be very attractive to me. In terms of physical beauty, she must have nice legs, nice buttocks and an appealing face that would make me want to kiss her.
