Pope Francis continued to show the true reflection of teachings in Christendom on Thursday as he met with Sudanese politicians.
The 85-year-old Christian icon went down on his knees to kiss the feet of the leaders who had been waging wars against one another in Sudan, turning the country to a depleted war zone.
His humility seemed to have astounded those present as everyone to watch on in amusement.
Afterward, Pope Francis asked the leaders to quit fighting against one another and put the civil war behind them.
He urged the president, Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Reik Machar to end the animosity between them and honor the agreements that have already been signed and let peace reign in the country.
He stressed, “I am asking you as a brother to stay in peace. I am asking you with my heart, let us go forward. There will be many problems but they will not overcome us. Resolve your problems.”
As expected, the gesture came as a surprise to the warring leaders as the apparently aging cleric had to kneel down with the help of aides around him.
The Vatican had called for a full day meeting with the politicians where prayers and biblical teachings were given as the country prepares to create a unity government in May, after many years of civil unrest.
