The death toll from an attack by a faction of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a Borno community has now risen to 69.
AFP reported this Wednesday, quoting security forces and residents of Felo village at Gabio district, where the incident occurred.
The community lies 80 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital.
ISWAP fighters in large numbers stormed the community on Tuesday, shot many residents, and ran others over with their vehicles.
The authorities reportedly sent 100 militiamen and local hunters to help defend against the assaults.
Although the death toll was initially pegged at 59, AFP quoted the sources as saying that 10 more bodies were discovered in the surroundings of the community.
“They actually killed 69 persons. More bodies were discovered scattered on the open expanse,” the news agency quoted a top military source as saying.
According to the news agency, a member of the Civilian JTF which responded to defend the community, Ibrahim Liman, confirmed the military officer’s figure.
