Six people drowned in River Benue following a boat mishap in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State last Thursday.
The unfortunate incident occurred when an overloaded boat crossing River Benue with mourners capsized.
According to reports, the boat was reportedly ferrying more than 18 persons without any life jacket.
Two bodies were said to have been recovered late on Thursday while three bodies were recovered early Friday morning.
The sole administrator of Guma Local Government Anthony Shawon said the accident occurred because the boat was overloaded with too many passengers.
Reports also indicated that the passengers and the transporters were drunk before boarding the boat and attempting to cross the river.
However shortly after the incident, youths in Gbajimba, headquarters of Guma local government, the country home of Governor Samuel Ortom took to the streets and protested, making bonfires and prevented movement of people within the town for several hours.
Benue state police command spokesman, ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the accident and the consequent mob action.
He however said normalcy has returned to the area as of the time of his report.
