Four Nigerians have been arrested by police for online dating fraud in Cape Town, South Africa.
Also arrested is a 31-year old South African woman.
Two of the suspects were arrested in Burgundy Estate while the rest were nabbed at their apartment in Summer Green, Cape Town.
The arrests were the result of an on-going investigations into an online dating scam in which unsuspecting women were targeted and robbed.
At least seven victims who have been conned a combined amount of close to R400 000 reported the matters and circumstances to Police.
The suspects would allegedly create fake accounts on online dating sites to lure women. They would chat with the victims for a while before starting to come up with different scenarios which would see women depositing or transferring money to the banking details which the suspects would have provided.
The South African woman, who is suspected to have been the one who cashing out all the money deposited by the victims, was found with R50 000 in cash when she was arrested.
All women who have been victims of online dating scams are urged to contact police so that their matters can be investigated.
The six suspects, aged between 27 and 37, will appear before the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday, facing charges of online dating fraud.
