4 Schoolgirls Drown Whilst Gathering Firewood

In Sakwaya village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, 4 primary school girls were found drowned after an attempt to swim across a pond.

DSP Abdu Jinjiri, Spokesman of the state Police Command, verified the incident saying in an interview on Saturday in Dutse:
“The deceased were residents of Sakwaya village and gave their names as Sumayya Gadi, 7; Zuwaira Abdulhamidu, 12; Gaji Saidu, 12, and Ummi Saidu, 11.

The deceased drowned in the pond after they tried to swim on their way to fetch firewood in nearby Farantawa village of Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident was reported to the Police by the relatives of the victims around 1:30p.m.

Police recovered the corpses on Saturday.

“The deceased were confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.” added the DSP.

DSP Jinjiri highlighted that the girls were buried accordingly with Islamic rites. “I advise parents and guardians in the area to monitor their children and ward’s movement to avoid such tragedy.” The spokesman also insisted the public keep an air of awareness about themslves so as to be able to assist distressed people during emergencies.
