4 Nigerians set to Fight It Out for African Footballer of The Year Award- Report

2 Min Read

Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi and Leicester City’s Ahmed Musa are all set to represent Nigeria as potential African Footballer of the year award winners.

According to the Vanguard, sources in CAF have intimated that the 4 Nigerians who have all had stellar years with their respective clubs will be nominated for the award and will have a chance to fight to win it.

Alex Iwobi has risen rather quickly in Arsenal’s ranks and has become a mainstay in the team with some eye-catching performances.

Iheanacho has impressed Guardiola and is currently seen as Sergio Aguero’s successor in the Manchester city team. The fans love him already and he is possibly the most exciting talent they’ve seen in a  while.

Ahmed Musa might just have moved to Leicester city and is currently having it a little difficult in terms of getting into the team, but he produced some scintillating performances for CSKA Moscow which prompted champions Leicester to fork out around £16m for his services which was at the time a club record fee.

Last but not least is Mikel Obi who was consistent for Chelsea even though the dethroned champions endured a horrible season last time out.

If any of them do win, It’ll be the first time a Nigerian has won it in 17 years as we have to go back to 1999 for the last time a Nigerian won it (Kanu).
