Mr Andrew Bala, Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Plateau Command, said on Saturday in Jos that 25 motorists were convicted for various road traffic offences.
Bala told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the offenders were apprehended by the officers and men of the corps on patrol and they were tried by a Mobile Court.
He said that the exercise took place on some highways within Jos-Bukuru metropolis.
According to him, mobile court has become one veritable tool that the corps uses to curtail the anomalies on highways especially during the Yuletide.
“Our men on patrol actually apprehended 28 motorists, but three were discharged and acquitted while 25 were found guilty and convicted.
“We mostly use the mobile courts these days because we feel there is the need to give motorists fair hearing and for me it is a better deal.
“The most prevalent offences these motorists were convicted include overloading, use of worn-out tyres, vehicle license violation, and driver’s license violation.
“Others include, use of phone while driving, seat belt violation and lack of caution signs,” he explained.
Bala explained that none of the convicted motorists were imprisoned because the court gave them an option to pay fines in accordance with the offence committed.
He said that the officers and men of the command would make the mobile court a routine measure to checkmate the excesses of drivers on highways.
According to Bala, the corps uses the mobile court session to check on tyres of vehicles so as to ensure that motorists don’t ply highways with expired tyres.
He advised vehicle owners to fix new tyres on their vehicles to guard against loss of lives and properties on highways. (NAN)
