The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three members of a cult group that specialises in terrorising residents of Ire-Akari Estate and environs in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest of the suspects on Sunday.
According to him, the three suspects were arrested late Saturday in a hotel in Idimu area of the state.
The arrest followed a report by the Guardian newspaper in which residents complained of living in fear as cult groups continually torment and extort them for days without intervention from security agents.
The report stated that a clash by cult groups in the area on May 22 led to the death of one person.
“They started their fight yesterday at about 7:00p.m. from one junction to another. We can’t move freely most nights because anywhere you go, you encounter them, they will collect all your belongings.
“We have called the police attention to this many times and they never respond to our calls. Is it until they kill us in our places of work?” a resident and business owner in the area, Ngozi Chijoke, reportedly said.
Quoting the report on Sunday, Hundeyin said, “Following receipt of this complaint, we swung into action, deploying our intelligence assets.
“Late last night, we busted three of the cultists in a hotel somewhere in Idimu and recovered these weapons in their possession.
“Details withheld as investigation is ongoing.”
