A young mother has been apprehended by the Niger state division of The Nigerian Police Force after she allegedly exchanged her one-week-old baby for the sum of N200,000. The 23-year-old who has been identified as Blessing Aluna, lives in Kogi State, around Rimi Lokoja Local Government area.
Blessing is said to have planned the sales of the baby with her boyfriend, Oludare Jeprince. Hence, he was arrested alongside her as an accomplice.
During her interrogation with the police, Blessing boldly faulted the situation of the country claiming poverty was the reason she carried out the criminal act.
She explained, “Imagine me selling my child for money; that will tell you the level of hardship in the country. I sold my own child for N200,000 in order to open a provision store in Suleja at least to take care of myself and my siblings.”
However, the young mother is now full of remorse. She subsequently stated that she was willing to live with the consequences of her action.
“I have done the worst thing to humanity and especially to my own child. I don’t think I deserve to be alive, let the law take its course.”
While speaking with newsmen after the interrogation, Niger State’s police spokesperson insisted that blessing and Oludare will be prosecuted once the police have finished its investigations.
