2027: Atiku, Peter Obi in Talks to Join SDP, Adebayo Reveals

2 Min Read

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is reportedly attracting big names from the opposition, with Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi said to be in talks to join the party. Adewale Adebayo, the SDP’s former presidential candidate, disclosed this while featuring on Channels Sunday Politics.

According to Adebayo, several prominent politicians are discussing a possible defection to the SDP, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and El-Rufai. Nasir El-Rufai, the former Kaduna governor, had earlier expressed his wish for these opposition leaders to join the SDP rather than form a merger or new party.

If these politicians join the SDP, they could potentially help the party defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu. Peter Obi has vowed to retire his counterparts from the APC, including Tinubu and Atiku, from politics if he becomes president.

The news comes amid a backdrop of shifting alliances and power dynamics in Nigerian politics. The SDP’s ability to attract high-profile defectors could significantly impact the country’s political landscape in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. However, the success of such a move remains to be seen, and the reactions of other stakeholders, including the APC and Labour Party, will be crucial in determining the outcome.
