2024 Olympics: Breakdancing Listed Among New Sports to be Held in Paris

Breakdancing has been included in the list of new sports to be held in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed today.

Breakdancing involves iconic stunts, side steps, acrobatics and choreography.

The decision was aimed at attracting a younger audience into the competition.

Among the newly added sports, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were also included.

The above three Sports will however debut at the COVID-19 delayed 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

The idea was earlier pitched in 2018 following trials at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina which emerged successful.

In 2024, the competitions will reportedly take place at a downtown venue in the French capital.

According to a 2019 Olympic program commission report, an estimated total of one million people are to take part in the breakdancing competition.

Following the IOC announcement, Ronnie Abaldonado, a competitive break-dancer who had been competing since 2004 and won the 2007 Red Bull BC One World Final said, “The biggest part is your stage presence and character and your rhythm, whether or not you’re really feeling it.

“People can hit the moves but if you’re not feeling what they’re doing then you just kind of look robotic and that’s what kind of separates it being a sport to it being an art form.”

Richard “Crazy Legs” Colon, a breakdance pioneer also said: “This is true folk art from the music to the dance, to the DJ to the rapper.

“We’ve already legitimized ourselves so we’re not looking to the Olympics for legitimacy.”
