President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, Mamman Daura says calls for zoning are unnecessary and competence should be the primary consideration to be elected president of Nigeria.
Daura, who is believed to head the infamous “cabal” in the presidency, stated this in a rare interview granted the BBC Hausa Service.
He noted that the nation already experimented with the idea of rotational presidency three times, saying it was high time it broke from the norm and enthroned competence above nepotism going into the 2023 general election.
According to him, rotational presidency and clamour for power shift would not help the nation’s efforts to forge a common identity.
Daura said, “This turn-by-turn, it was done once, it was done twice, and it was done thrice… It is better for this country to be one… It should be for the most competent and not for someone who comes from somewhere.”
He also denied controlling the president as many Nigerians have cone to believe.
Daura said that while he has offered advice to the president on many occasions, they were solicited.
“Yes, I do visit him to greet him; I do give him advice, but if he asked…I advise him. But I don’t go there on my own and insist I must do this or that. No. You don’t do that to the government,” he stated.
