Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has approached a Federal High Court, Abuja to seek interpretation of the constitution and public service rules on public servants seeking elective positions while in office, it has emerged.
The Punch reported that Emefiele engaged constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN for the job.
According to the report, which quoted an unnamed source within the apex bank, the case is due for hearing today (Monday).
Recall that a coalition comprising three interest groups – the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Friends of Emefiele and Emefiele Support Group – procured the APC’s presidential Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the CBN governor on Friday.
The action generated public outcry, with some political stakeholders, including Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, demanding Emefiele’s resignation or sacking.
However, Emefiele took to his verified Twitter handle on Sunday to distance himself from groups’ action.
He said he was still waiting on God’s directive on whether or not to vie for the presidency.
While thanking the groups, Emefiele said he could not accept the forms procured by them but he would use his hard-earned resources to procure the forms should he decide to contest.
Meanwhile, it has also emerged that Emefiele registered as a member of the APC in February 2021.
Chairman of APC Ward 6 in the Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Nduka Erikpume confirmed Emefiele’s membership of the party, The Punch also reported.
