New Police Inspector General, Adamu Mohammed

The acting Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Mohammed Adamu has said that personnel of the force would conduct themselves professionally before, during and after the general elections.

Adamu gave the assurance when the British High Commissioner, the EU representative in Nigeria, Heads of Mission of US, France and Germany paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday in Abuja.

“I have said it before, we will remain professional in our conduct before, during and after the elections.

“We will provide a level playing field for all the candidates in the process. We have made adequate provisions to provide security at polling booths and collation centres.

“We will seek advice from you so that we can improve in our operations,” he said.

Adamu said that the EU and the US had contributed much to the development of policing in Nigeria by providing high quality training and support.

In her remarks, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing said that her county was supporting the police in a wide range of areas.

Laing said other areas included public accountability, service delivery and coordination ahead of the general elections.

She said that Britain was also supporting the police in the training of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the six geopolitical zones.

The envoy said that the country was also supporting in the coordination of security with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

On his part, the U.S. Deputy Head of Mission, David Young said that the US have projects such as the Transition Police Units (TPU) in the country.

He said that other supporting initiatives included provision of jackets and helmets for policemen deployed to the North East of Nigeria and advisers working with the police.

“Again, we value very much our cooperation and engagement and look forward to deepen them and broaden you to face the security challenges facing your country,” he said. (NAN)
