The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), professor Mahmood Yakubu, has reiterated that he doesn’t see resigning as an option for him, despite calls from some Nigerians that he should.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Mahmood stated, “I see no reason to even contemplate resigning”.
He further explained that he is still Nigeria’s Chief Electoral Officer, assuring the crowd that the commission will ensure the elections will be successful.
He said, “I am not under any pressure. The last time I checked and that is the situation as we speak, I am the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Nigeria, and constitutionally the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federal Republic and Returning Officer for the presidential elections.”
Mahmood equally explained that as long as he remains in his position, he’ll put the power vested on him through the constitution to action, during the general elections.
He reiterated that he considers it a privilege to be in the position and will not be stepping down as a result of election postponement. However, he assured that there won’t be any further postponement, adding that the commission is ready to do its job as required.
