The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington, has urged Nigerians to query how candidates for electoral posts would fulfil their campaign promises when elected into office.
Symington said it was not enough for politicians to make promises without laying out plausible ways to achieve them.
Also, the US ambassador noted that the 2019 general election could decide Nigeria’s fate, urging stakeholders to promote a peaceful and credible process.
Symington, who spoke after meeting Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wine at the Government House, Port Harcourt, said, “All of the institutions of government must do what is right. An election is not a matter of life and death.
“It is a matter of defining the future of Nigeria. There must be free, fair and credible elections.”
He urged the youths to shun any move by politicians to use them to perpetrate violence before, during and after the polls.
“I am quite confident that on election day, the sons and daughters of the powerful will not be out there causing violence,” he observed.
