Representatives of 25 opposition parties in Osun state walked out on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday over a dispute on who would superintend the upcoming gubernatorial elections in the State.
The incident occurred during a stakeholders meeting in Osogbo yesterday, and was because the parties were displeased with the posting of Rufus Akeju to the State as the Resident Electoral Commissioner.
Representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Labour Party (LP) all told Jega that there could be no free and fair elections in the State with Rufus Akeju at the helms.
They claim that Akeju is a card carrying member of the APC, having worked under Tinubu in Lagos.
The disgruntled party reps carried placards and blocked the entrance to the stakeholders meeting, shouting demands for Akeju’s removal.
Jega said that he would be unable to remove Akeju unless any concrete evidence against the man was brought forward.
Jega demanded that all billboards and sign posts promoting any political party in the state be removed.
