Hot on the heels of the murder of a RCCG Deaconess by some suspected extremists, comes news that a set of youths have destroyed a church in Niger state over having prayers on a Friday.
According to Thisday, the youths claimed that Friday was a day of prayer for the Muslims and that Sunday was the only day the Christians were allowed to have service.
The Catholic Church, St. Philip’s Catholic Parish, Baki Iku, close to Zuma Rock in Niger State, has Reverend Father Gobep Luka Sylvester as its vicar general and he confirmed the attack, saying that the youths destroyed church premises worth thousands of naira.
Father Sylvester also claimed that the security guards at the church were seriously injured.
According to him, ‘’Sometime around 2pm, some Muslim youths in numbering 200 left their Mosque after their Friday Jumat prayer and rushed to the Church premises, climbed the wall and destroyed everything in the Church: the windows, the altar, musical instruments, the chapel.
’The security man in the church premises was beaten to a pulp. Some women who were holding a prayer meeting were chased away. The seminarian who is resident in the premises was also beaten up and chased away.”
The incident has been reported to the police who claim that they are looking into the matter.
Due to the timing of the attack, Father Sylvester mused over it saying “Just last week, Mrs. Eunice Olawale, a mobile preacher of the Redeemed Christian Church of God was killed by some fanatical Muslims in Kubwa, FCT. How long are we going to continue like this?”
