Vocal Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called for a probe of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation accounts by auditors not linked to foreign countries where the money could have been stashed by corrupt senior administration officials.
Gumi, speaking to SaharaReporters in an interview earlier this weekend. said that Western countries could be involved in the laundering of such huge amount of funds and that neutral countries like Russia, China and Germany would be more suitable to carry out the audit. He advocated for selection of the auditors by the National Assembly as the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala could be compromised.
Gumi said the Jonathan administration seemed too tolerant on corruption and that the sacking of Stella Oduah was too little, too late.
“Already the nation has characterized the regime as tolerant to corruption,” he said. “The image has not yet been corrected. It would have been a better image if the president had sacked that woman.”
