Residents of Kofar Waika community have written a letter of complaint to the governor of Kano state about Shiites’ dangerous activities in the area and called to demolish the residence of late Muhammad Turi that has been converted to a shrine.
The residents wrote a proposed list of actions to be taken against Shiite Muslims as “no resident of Waika area is following “Shiite religion.”
The petition dated January 12th, 2016 and signed by Alhaji Lawan Waika urged the government to urgently demolish or take over the Islamic Centre. They also expressed their concern about “strange faces moving in and out” of Turi house”
Also, they reported about Shiite preaching sessions in Kano Markaz directed at insulting those in constituted authority. “They also disrespect the traditional rulers and members of the security agencies and also incite their followers to carry out violent acts”, the petition read.
It would be recalled that the heavy fighting between the Nigerian army and the Shiites broke out on Saturday, 12 December 2015 in the ancient Islamic town of Zaria. The movement leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky has been reportedly severely wounded and arrested after the army raided his house and killed his son, assistants and hundreds of followers.
