A recent survey indicated that 102,000 children under five years in Jigawa did not get exclusive breastfeeding, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has said.

The Programme Officer of the Centre, Malam Mohammad Murtala, disclosed this in a presentation at a one-day workshop on tracking and monitoring of nutrition budget in Dutse.

Murtala explained that following a poor intake of nutrition among the under five children, Jigawa has a record of 50 per cent prevalence rate of acute malnutrition among its children.

He said that the situation was above the national average of 32 per cent.

According to him, 62.3 per cent of the children have stunted growth due to chronic malnutrition.

He noted that this indicated that there was possibility to have six in every 10 children that would suffer from the stunting disease in the state.

The programme officer added that the survey also indicated that 25,000 children died globally per day and out of which 11,000 died daily globally as a result of malnutrition.

He said that if acute malnutrition remained unchecked, it could lead to the death of 32,000 children in Jigawa this year.
