The Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Power, Senator Bukar Mustapha has said that President Buhari’s promise of 10,000 Megawatts of Electricity might not be achievable but that President Muhammadu Buhari has laid the foundation for the country’s prosperity in the last one year of his administration.
He said this in Abuja also expressing disappointment over the poor performance of electricity generating and distribution companies in the country.
He urged the Federal Government to review the privatisation the Power sector if they wanted results.
Mustapha said that the review should be a no-brainer seeing the glaring inability of the generating companies (GenCos) and distribution companies (DisCos) to fulfill their own part of the bargain of providing electricity in the country.
He noted that the country is losing between N10 billion and N15 billion monthly due to some weaknesses in the power sector chain.
He also pointed out that the effectiveness of the DisCos was heavily dependent on the improvement in power generation and stressed that the promise of 10,000 megawatts would be unachievable if the power sector is not stabilised and repositioned.
He believes that the way to go about this is a second look at the Power Sector act and looking at ways to tweak it so that it is more in favour of Nigerians.
