No fewer than 10 persons were reportedly killed after gunmen, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, attacked four communities in the Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State.
Earlier, The Herald had reported news of the Boko Haram attack on Borno communities.
The villages attacked include Tashan Alade, Shaffa and Khiributu.
The Borno state Governor, Babagana Zulum, in a statement by his spokesperson, Isa Gusau, reported only three people were killed.
However, sources have contradicted that report, with a security personnel based in the area reporting that the villagers have counted at least 10 corpses.
The source claims that the victims were mostly men and children.
“The gunmen simply opened fire on both the residents and their livestock. We counted about 10 corpses, mostly men and children,” the source reported.
The attack occurred on Saturday when the terrorists arrived in 10 trucks to attack the villages near Chibok in the southern part of Borno State.
They torched homes and public buildings while firing sporadically at fleeing residents.

Two Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN) churches in Tashan Allade were also razed down during the attack.
Governor Zulum subsequently paid a visit to the communities on Sunday.
He lamented the situation where the terrorists looted thousands of bags of farm produce recently harvested by farmers.
Zulum noted that shops and market stalls were not left out of the looting spree.
The governor ordered the provision of six patrol vehicles and other components to shore up and enable the local security network in the Shafa community to function better.
Only a few days ago a similar incident occurred in Pemi, a ward in the Chibok Local Government Area of the state.
In that attack, about eight people were confirmed killed.
Only recently, the nation was rocked by the abduction of the “Kankara schoolboys“, a situation that worsens the already deteriorating security issues rocking the nation.
