About 28 persons, including a police corporal are said to have been killed when gunmen yesterday attacked two communities around Ganawuri in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The police corporal, identified as Jibrin Sule, was said to be among the security personnel posted to the area to maintain order following the outbreak of violence.
Eyewitness accounts said that the gunmen stormed the villages of Da Jak and Attakar, set fire to the houses and as the people were fleeing, they opened fire on them.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Chris Olakpe, confirmed the attacks and the killing of the corporal.
He said investigations into the attack have commenced even as no arrests are yet to be made.
The member representing Riyom constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr Daniel Dem also confirmed the attack, saying dozens were killed, although he could not give an exact number.
He lamented the continuous attack on his people without the security men on ground doing anything to protect them and reaffirmed his earlier call for a review of the security arrangement which he said was not yielding expected result.
